Steve Skipper, known affectionately as Poppy, passed away on July 24th, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on November 19th, 1945 to father Edgar Bilbo and mother Carrie Lee Skipper of Picayune, MS. He is one of four children, brother Gabriel Skipper (deceased) and Byron Skipper (surviving) and sister Gaylene O’Cain (spouse, Jim O’Cain surviving).

Steve leaves behind his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Joan Skipper. He was a proud father to his children, Trevor Skipper and his wife Marla, and Erin Skipper Moorman and her husband Mark. He was also a loving Poppy to his five grandchildren: Ross Skipper, Claire Skipper (with fiancé Rourke Russell), Graham Skipper, Sophie Moorman (with fiancé Quentin Viau) and Whitt Moorman. His family was his greatest pride and joy!

After moving to Selmer, Tennessee from Mississippi in 1971, Steve began his long career with General Electric, where he worked for almost 35 years before retiring. He spent much of his time on the golf course, was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed nothing more than being with his family and cheering for the Volunteers. He was also a long time supporter of the McNairy Central Bobcats, donning his blue and gold never missing a game for many years. He himself was a standout football player at nationally ranked Pearl River Junior College.

Steve will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his great stories, and the way he touched the lives of everyone he met. He never missed an activity or event with his own kids and that was also true of his grandchildren. He spent his retired life at soccer fields, baseball fields, football games, volleyball courts, & dance competitions, when he wasn’t fishing or playing golf. He had a strong faith and was a follower of Christ, and he never missed an opportunity to always work on being the best person and best version of himself. He was a true inspiration to so many through youth sports in the 1970 - 1980’s, where he coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and pee wee football. It’s been evident, after all these years, by how many have reached out to share what an impact he had on them as a coach and a person.
