Steve Young

August 4, 1947 — April 7, 2014

Mr. Steve Young, age 66 of Bolivar, Tennessee departed this life Monday, April 7, 2014.

Mr. Young was born in Corinth, Mississippi August 4, 1947 to the late George Washington and Mabel Ophelia Hurst Young. On May 16, 1971, he was united in marriage to the former Connie Lax, who survives.

He lived in Hardeman County for most of his life and was an educator, retiring in 2012 after with 38 years in the field of education. He served 10 of those years as assistant deputy director of Hardeman County Schools. Mr. Young also served as a County Commissioner for over 28 years.

He was a member and Deacon at the Middleburg Baptist Church, where he also taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, taught children's classes and did whatever needed to be done.

Known to many as "Coach Young," he loved coaching football. He also loved sports and looked forward to his weekly basketball games and golf matches with his friends. He was very proud that he was the oldest player on the court when he played basketball. Some of his favorite pastimes included cutting and splitting wood, mowing grass on his Kubota tractor, and traveling.

He spent most of his retirement either helping someone out or playing with and babysitting his grandchildren, whom he loved very dearly. He had a great sense of humor and could bring a smile to anyone's face. He could also be stern when needed. He was known to quiet a noisy room with one yell. Coach Young also enjoyed watching movies with his son David, and "kicking back" in his favorite chair to watch westerns.

Whatever name was special to you, Coach Young, Mr. Young, Steve, Dad or Pappy (as he was known to his grandchildren) will forever be missed in our lifetime here on earth.

In addition to his wife of nearly 43 years, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Anderson and husband Franklin of Bolivar; two sons, Joseph Keith Young and wife Debbie of Selmer, and David George Young of Bolivar; two sisters, Kay Alexander of Hayden Corner, Alabama, and Yvonne Johnson of Powder Springs, Georgia; and six grandchildren, Olivia Young, Samuel Young, Lily Anne Young, Wyatt Eugene Anderson, Abram Lee Anderson and Adeline Sue Anderson.
