Sue Nelle Hanna

March 11, 1917 — November 1, 2011

Mrs. Hanna died November 1, 2011 in Monroe, Louisiana.

The youngest of three children, she was born March 11, 1917, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Henry George and Sarah Frances Rush Masters. At the age of three the family moved to Silerton which she always thought of as home. She was inspired by a former teacher, Mrs. Dixon, to become a teacher and after graduating from Bolivar Central High School in 1934 she attended West Tennessee State College for teachers, in Memphis, and later Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson. She taught at Hooper's School and then at Silerton School where she taught 12 1/2 years, 2 as principal. It was there she met Clint Hanna of Hornsby and after his return from WWII they married. During the war, she worked for Tayloe Paper Company in Memphis, Ford Motor Company, building airplane parts and Oak Ridge Atomic Factory. They lived in Silerton and Rockvale, TN prior to moving to Monroe, LA in 1954. After Dr. Hanna passed away in 1965, Sue Nelle completed her education at Northeast Louisiana College and began her 20 year teaching career in Louisiana. She taught a total of 35 years before retiring. She was very proud of being named the first "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" of Ouachita Parish in 1983, and wanted to be remembered as a 1st Grade Teacher.

Mrs. Hanna considered family and friends as her greatest blessings. A devoted child of God, she was a faithful member of College Place Baptist Church in Monroe. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, flower arranging, arts and crafts and traveling, visiting almost every continental state with friends from Silerton upon graduation.

She is survived by 3 daughters, Anne Elizabeth McKay of Garland, TX, Patricia Clark and husband John of Monroe, LA, and Sue Ellen West and husband James of Shreveport, LA; 2 granddaughters, Kathryn Lindsey and husband Bryan and Sarah McKay; and 1 great-grandson, Felix Lindsey. In addition to her parents, siblings and husband, she is preceded in death by a her son James Edward Hanna and a son-in-law Ralph H. McKay..
