Obituary

Mabel Sue Whitten, known affectionately by all as Sue, passed away on May 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, nurturing care, and deep devotion to her family. Born on July 13, 1936, in Chester County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Vassie Pearson.

On August 11, 1953, Sue married the love of her life, Orville Whitten. Together, they shared 72 years of marriage, building a life rooted in faith and community. Sue was a dedicated employee of the Brown Shoe Company for many years until its closing. Showing her characteristic resilience and desire to help others, she then returned to school to attain her GED and then to begin a second career as a home health nurse, where she spent years providing comfort and care to those in need.

Sue was a faithful member of the Maggie Jones United Methodist Church. She was perhaps best known for her love of cooking and her green thumb. Her family and neighbors were the frequent beneficiaries of her bountiful garden, and no one ever left her table hungry. She found great joy in preparing meals with fresh vegetables she grew herself, always making sure there was plenty to share with anyone who stopped by.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jeffrey Harold Whitten; her brothers, Truman, Ray, and R.D. Pearson; and her sisters, Velma Hart, Thelma Hanna, Nell Keen, Jewell McCombs, and an infant sister.

Sue is survived by her devoted husband of 72 years, Orville Whitten; her son, Anthony Whitten of Savannah, Tennessee; and a host of extended family members, friends, and church family who will miss her kind spirit and her home-cooked meals.
