Teddy Gene Battles, a fearless adventurer and craftsman, passed away at his home on July 28, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on August 23, 1942, in Hardin County, Tennessee, he was the beloved son of the late Alanzo Lane Battles and Mary Reithie Fezell Battles.
An ironworker by trade, Teddy spent much of his life rigging heavy equipment and eventually became the proud owner of Eagle Crane Service. In his younger years, he traveled across the country setting up massive tower cranes. Possessing absolutely no fear of heights, Teddy was a true daredevil who carried that same high-flying passion into his personal life. He began with hang gliding before moving into flying ultralight aircraft. His adventurous spirit even caught the attention of the local newspaper when he famously flew his ultralight all the way from Chicago down to his home in Michie, Tennessee.
Beyond his love for high-flying adventures, Teddy had a big heart, especially when it came to animals. He was a dedicated dog lover who rescued many dogs over the years, though his faithful companion, Jack, held a uniquely special place in his heart.
Teddy was preceded in death by his parents, Alanzo Lane Battles and Mary Reithie Fezell Battles.
His memory and spirit of adventure live on through those he leaves behind. He is survived by his sons, Teddy Gene Battles Jr. of Old Fort, TN, and Matt Battles of Illinois; and his daughter, Maddlyn Battles of Illinois. The family wishes to express a very special recognition and heartfelt gratitude to Valinda Hamilton, his special niece, who devotedly took care of Teddy for the last 14 years.
"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward."
