Thelma ‘Sammie’ Cherry
Henderson: Thelma Dean Smith Cherry, age 79, died Thursday night at her home in Henderson.
Mrs. Cherry was born and reared in Chester County, the daughter of the late Jerry Clyde and Mary Lessie Mullins Smith. She attended Chester County Schools and in 1957 married Edward Long ‘Ed’ Cherry. She worked in the garment industry; Salant and Salant, Chester Manufacturing, and Oakley Fashions and then at Jackson General Hospital in environmental services, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She was a member of the Pinson Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband Ed Cherry, two sons; Eddie Cherry and wife Kim and Ray Cherry and wife Cindy all of Henderson, four grandchildren; Chad Cherry and wife Keisha, Chris Cherry, Alex Cherry, and Cody Cherry and two great grandchildren; Case and Jase Cherry. Also surviving are three sisters; Lorraine Butler of Parsons, Stella Malone of Henderson, Wilda Maness of Arlington and a brother Buddy Smith of Finger.
She was preceded in death by two infant children, Jennifer and Charles, a brother Jerry Paul Smith, and two sisters; Bobbie Weaver and Jane McDonald.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Dr. Roy Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery at Jacks Creek.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford – Casey Chapel beginning at 5:00 PM Saturday.
