Thelma Holmes Whitehurst

Thelma Holmes Whitehurst of Acton, TN was born at home in Kennett, MO on July 28, 1918 to the late John William and Ersie Arizona James Holmes. She grew up and was baptized into Christ at the Slicer Street church of Christ in Kennett, where her grandfather was one of the first elders. She met her husband, Barnett Brice Whitehurst, at church with her uncle's encouragement. They were united in marriage on December 18, 1934 having celebrated 50 years together until his death on February 21, 1985.

Thelma lived her life in service to her Lord, His church, her family and friends. She was a devoted member of the Acton church of Christ and a charter member of Freed-Hardeman Associates. She was a longtime member of the former Acton Home Demonstration Club. She enjoyed hosting family, friends, and many visiting ministers (66), some of which she hosted many times. She loved to travel and never lost her enthusiasm for learning. She and Barney traveled most of the United States and into Canada. She continued her education as a grandmother by taking piano lessons and also classes at UT Knoxville.

On November 10, 2015, Thelma passed away peacefully in her home where she was being cared for by her daughter.

Survivors include two sons, Garland Brice Whitehurst and wife Georgia and Ray Holmes Whitehurst; her daughter, Alice Whitehurst Moore, all of Acton, TN; seven grandchildren, Chrissie Henthorne and husband Mark, Janie Frizzell and husband Tim, Daniel Whitehurst, David Moore and wife Linda, Kevin Moore and wife Andrea, Amy Sharpton and husband John, Timothy Moore and wife Joyce; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Azalee Ambrose of Acton, and a host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Whitehurst was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Stoner; three brothers, James William (Bill) Holmes, Ballard Holmes, Burley (Mike) Holmes; her son-in-law, Darrell Moore, and double first cousins, Cecil Holmes and Mabel Holmes.
