Velma Dixon Long, 97, of Waynesboro, TN died Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Sewanee Hospital. Ms. Long was born on February 2, 1920 in Waynesboro, Tn. She was the oldest child of James Robert and Sally Ellen Byrd Dixon. Ms. Long served the public for many years as an LPN. She was a member of Waynesboro United Methodist Church, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, worked in a local flower shop, and enjoyed cooking and serving as a teacher’s aid after her retirement.
Ms. Long is survived by her three children, Bryce (Ginger) Long, Dan (Barbara) Long, and Nancy (Paul) Cunningham; one sister, Margie Dixon Williamson; one sister-in -law Nita Dixon; five grandchildren, Dana Long Peel, Suzanne (Kent) Stanley, Lori Riley, Adam (Kirsten) Cunningham, and Leah (Kyle) Price; six great grandchildren, Tessa (Kyle) Bradford, Hunter Peel, Isabella Stanley, Will Riley, Lydia Riley, and Lylah Riley; and one great great grandchild, Makayleigh Ryan Bradford; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Robert and Sally Ellen Byrd Dixon; and four siblings, Jimmie Miller, Barbara Walkup, Lolita Heflin, and Blair Dixon. Serving as pallbearers were Adam Cunningham, Kyle Price, Kyle Bradford, Hunter Peel, Will Riley, and B.J. McNeese. Funeral was held at Shackelford Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 7th and was officiated by Paul Cunningham. The burial was at Highland Methodist Church Cemetery.
