Vena Mae Smith

Henderson, TN:

Vena Mae Thomas Smith age 94 passed away Friday morning, September 28, 2018 at her home.

She was born August 24, 1924 in Chester County, the daughter of the late Major McKinley and Dona Edell Whitman Thomas. She married Earlon Smith in 1947. They made their home in Chester County. She was employed by Salant & Salant in 1943 and later by I Appel and retired in 1988. After retirement she provided childcare for the children of many friends and family known as her coon pups. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Cave Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Sheila Ann Hopkins and husband Jimmy of Henderson and three grandchildren, Bennie Todd Hopkins (Michelle), John Mark Hopkins (Jennifer) and Robert Joshua Hopkins (Echo) all of Henderson. She was affectionately known as “Great Granny” by her great grandchildren, Ethan, McKinley, Hayden, Ian, Emma, Cason, Joslyn and Keirston who also survive her. She was also known as Ma Mae to Kyle Scott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earlon Smith in 2001 and two brothers, Warren Thomas and Wayne Thomas.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday at Cave Springs Baptist Church with Ronnie Geary and Jeff Young, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cave Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Shackelford Funeral Directors – East Main Chapel 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM Sunday and beginning at 9:00 AM on Monday at the church.
