Waldo Barron was born on December 14, 1931 in Kilmichael, Mississippi, to William Flavus Barron and Blanche McNeer Barron. His parents were sharecroppers in the Mississippi delta most of his childhood. During his teens, they moved to Booneville, Mississippi, where he played highschool basketball and football for the Booneville Blue Devils. His basketball team won the 1949 State Championship under Coach Paschal Box. This was the first for the Blue Devils. This is where he met the love of his life, Peggy Dillon.
In 1950, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served 4 years. In March of 1954, they had their first child, a son named William Daniel (Dan) Barron and on December 30, 1957, their daughter Terri was born. On June 6, 1954, he was discharged from the Marines and they moved to Savannah, Tennessee. Waldo went to work for Henry Dillon, his father in law, with Dillon Manufacturing. He later worked for Angelica for 43 years from June 14, 1954 until January 1, 1997.
Mr. Barron was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting deer, turkey, and groundhogs. But most of all, he was known for his fishing abilities and was featured in the 1982 edition of Southern Outdoors magazine, with an article titled, “The Pickwick Popper”.
He was a loving family man and will be truly missed.
Waldo Barron departed this life on April 15, 2025 in Savannah, Tennessee, at the age of 93 years, 4 months, and 1 day.
He is survived by his daughter, Terri Durham of Savannah, Tennessee; daughter in law, Shirley Hurt Barron of Savannah, Tennessee; sister, Sarah Lynn George of Madison, Mississippi; grandchildren, Brent Barron and his wife Loren, Holley Smith, Michael Jackson, and Christopher Jackson and his wife Toni; and great grandchild, Brady Chandler.
In addition to his parents, Waldo was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Dillon Barron; son, William Daniel “Dan” Barron; and brother, Wendell Flavus Barron.
