WARREN GARNER
Finger: Warren Garner, age 90 died Saturday night at Jackson General Hospital.
Mr. Garner was born and reared in McNairy County, the son of the late Arlis David and Lettie Victoria Rankin Garner. He graduated from Bethel Springs High School. He entered the United States Army and served in Germany and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded in action on January 31, 1945. He was hospitalized in Glasgow Scotland and later transferred to New York and was returned to Memphis by train. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and was disabled from his injury.
He married Bessie Faye Archer January 22, 1949. They were married 62 years and 1 day, having had their 62nd wedding anniversary the day before Mr. Garner’s death.
He farmed in the Old Friendship Community all his adult life.
Mr. Garner served as the Chester County Veterans Service Officer and the Chester County Civil Defense Director for 20 years. He was instrumental in Chester County receiving a federal grant to build the Public Safety Building in Henderson. Mr. Garner assisted many veterans and veteran’s widows in receiving VA benefits.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a 50 year member of the Old Purdy Masonic Lodge in Bethel Springs and he was a member of the Estes Church of Christ.
Mr. Garner loved to hunt and fish with the aide of a four wheeler, which he often referred to as “his legsâ€.
He is survived by his wife Bessie Faye Archer Garner, a son Johnny Garner and wife Carolyn, and two grandchildren Dina Garner and Blake Garner all of Finger. He also has a sister Ethel Hurst of Bethel Springs.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four bothers; Macy Garner, Haven Garner, Waldo Garner, and Will Garner, who died one week ago.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Shackelford – Casey Chapel with Billy Smith and Roy Sharp officiating and burial will follow with Military Honors at Refuge Cemetery in McNairy County.
The family will receive friends at Shackelford – Casey Chapel beginning 4:00 PM Monday.
