Wesley Earl Whitten was born January 7, 1921 in Florence, Alabama, the son of the late Sherman Randolph and Isa Bailey Whitten. He was united in marriage to Virginia Lynch on December 4, 1943.
Mr. Whitten was a Galzier for 32 years at PPG/Glass Service Center. He was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Tennessee and served in France and Germany until the end of World War II with the United States Army. When discharged, he was ranked as Sargeant and received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the European-Africian and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars, the Bronze Star medal, the Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Whitten departed this life on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro, Tennessee at the age of 88 Years, 5 Months, 18 Days.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lynch Whitten of Waynesboro, TN; a daughter, Vicki Whitten Stracener and husband, Jeff of Chattanooga, TN; a son, Jerry Earl Whitten of Killen, Al; grandchildren, Jennifer Anne and Joseph Alan Stracener; sisters, Irene Whitten Melson of Collinwood, TN and Joyce Whitten Sink of Paragon, IN; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Whitten was preceded in death by two brothers, Buford Elgie and Jetty Nolan Whitten and two infant sisters.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, Tennessee, with John E. Banks and W. L. Wallace officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Memorial Gardens at Waynesboro, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors of Wayne County directing. Visitation will be Friday, June 26, 2009 from 7 pm to 9 pm and Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 8 am to service time at the funeral home.
