Wilbert Wilkerson departed this life Sunday, June 17, 2012 at the age of 90 years, 30 days.
Wilbert or "Wib" as his friends knew him, was born on May 17, 1922 the son of the late Harve and Maude Canady Wilkerson. He grew up working on the family's 500 acre farm. Performing general farm duties such as, assisting in the planting, cultivating, and harvesting of the corn, cotton, hay, and potatoes. To do these tasks he would use a tractor and a team of horses. He would also tend to the poultry and livestock on the farm. In September 1942, Wilbert enlisted in the Army. This service took him overseas with the 825th Engineer Aviation Battalion to England, France and Germany over a period of 31 months. He received his Honorable Discharge January 1946.
Wilbert made his home in the Burnt Church Community in Savannah and made his living as a logger, which he loved. As a logger he had worked for Wilkerson Logging and Baugus Saw Mill. When Wilbert wasn't logging he enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Burnt Church Store and playing a game of checkers.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Lou Wilkerson Copeland of Savannah, Tennessee, along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Wilkerson and siblings, Josie Franks, Daisy Austin, Carrie Hazel Perry, Sarah Margaret Haynes, Lura Mae Franks, Gilbert Wilkerson and James (Dude) Wilkerson.
