William Lewyel Johnson

February 21, 1925 — October 4, 2011

William Lewyel (Lew) Johnson of Waynesboro, TN was born February 21, 1925 in Wayne County, Tennessee, the son of the late William Morris and Mary Copeland Johnson. He was united in marriage to Clara Nell Repp, the daughter of Orville and Lula Smith Repp and a classmate with Lewyel of the 1943 class, on August 13, 1943.



They had two sons, Tony Johnson, who preceded his father in death, and John Johnson of Atlanta, GA, who survives along with Lewyel's two granddaughters, Carrie Johnson of Atlanta, GA and Martica Johnson Craven of Asheboro,NC and Lewyel's wife, Clara Nell Johnson of Waynesboro, TN and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and son, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a sister, Athole Johnson Lamont.



In 1955, after 12 years of marriage, Lewyel and Clara decided that he would further his education, which was accomplished by attending Vanderbilt University and receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1959. He joined Union CarbideCorporation immediately in Greenville, NC.



This was the beginning of a 30 year career with Carbide in varied capacities mostly related to the manufacturing of consumer products, namely, Prestone, Eveready, Glad Bags, and other well known brands. Lewyell and Clara lived in 13 homes in 9 states as a result of job related transfers by Union Carbide Corporation.



Mr. Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, Tennessee and departed this life on Tuesday, October 4, 2011at Wayne Medical Center in Waynesboro, Tennessee at the age of 86 Years, 7 Months, 13 Days.



Memorial services will be Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 1:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, Tennessee with Lea Thornton and Jerry Duren officiating. At his request, Mr. Johnson's body will be cremated and his cremains buried at McGlamery Cemetery, Collinwood, Tennessee with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Waynesboro, directing.
