William Earl ‘Bill’ Shumate, age 72 passed away Friday evening March 29, 2024, at Jackson General Hospital.
He was born in Leland, Mississippi and grew up in north Jackson, the son of the late James Arnold and Gladys Lucille Pritchard Shumate. He attended Northside High School. He married Karen Jones, and they made their home at Jacks Creek. He worked as a self-employed carpet installer and was a ‘jack of all trades’ and very good at it. He boxed under Rayford Collins at Golden Gloves Boxing in Jackson. He was very active coaching Dixie Youth baseball as his boys played and enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his kids and grandkids, and with his Chocolate Chesapeake Lab, Tucker.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Karen Jones Shumate of Jacks Creek, two sons: Corey Shumate (Tonya) of Henderson, and Dustin Shumate (Candice) of Jacks Creek, three daughters: Angie Finch (Sammy) of Henderson, Tonya Clark (Bobby) of Savannah and Amanda Bayless (Zach) of Jacks Creek, two brothers: Buck Shumate of Humboldt and Jimmy Shumate (Kandee) of Jackson, four sisters: Ann Lively of Jackson, Sherry Hardee of Jackson, Pat Moore (David) of Medon and Debbie Mulliniks (Willie) of Jackson. He has twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons Nic Finch and Drew Finch, a great grandson Noah Escue, and a sister Brenda Vann.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue Chapel with Dwight Jones and David Moore officiating.
Burial will follow at Cave Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 AM Monday until funeral time of 2:00 PM.
