Joe “Fig” Newton Pinson, TN: Joel Franklin “Fig” Newton, age 88, of Pinson, TN, passed away, Wednesday, November 24, 2021. He was born to Ethel Irene Henry Newton, and James Milo Newton, July 22, 1933, in McNairy County. Joe was a member of the Pinson Church of Christ, where he was one of the first members. On September 21, 1953, Joe married Dorothy Nell Esra Newton in Corinth, Mississippi. They were married for 68 years. In 1951, Joe graduated school from the State of Arkansas. Joe joined the Navy in 1951, Greenville, Mississippi serving 5 years. He was on the CVA 45 Valley Forge Battleship. Joe fought in the Korean War, 4 years. After the war Joe attended Electronic school in Memphis. Moving to Pinson, he worked at Montgomery Wards, Sears Svc. Dept, Owens Corning, joined Pinson Ruritan Club and Ruritan Bowl, taught CPR -Instructor Trainer, appointed American Heart Cardiac Care for State of Tennessee, and was the first to start the Tennessee Children’s Home. While his wife Dorothy worked as, Mom Newton at Paul Gray, 1988-95, Joe worked at Freed -Hardeman doing electrical, maintenance, plumbing, and refrigeration. He was known by the boys as, Pop Newton. A few other cherished names he was referred by were: Baby, Daddy, Father, Papaw Joe, and Fig. Joe was preceded in death by his parents James and Ethel Newton; siblings Albert, James, Glenn and Bubba Newton and a grandchild James Harrison Newton. Leaving to cherish his precious memories are, his wife Dorothy Newton; children Loran Newton, Jimmy Collins (Darlene), Sherri Thomas (Mike), Daryl Newton (Angie), Amy Farrell (Danny); 11 Grandkids, 14 Great Grandkids and siblings: Mary Sue Dicus and Patsy Garrott. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 29, 2021 at the Pinson church of Christ with Ray Eaton, Ben Flatt and Tommy Burrow officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens in Jackson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, November 28, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson – Crook Avenue Chapel and then on Monday morning from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Pinson church of Christ. In lieu of flowers PLEASE make donations to the: James Harrison Newton Scholarship Fund at Freed-Hardeman University.
